Why the Spread Matters
A Tarot spread is the layout of cards drawn during a reading. Each position in the spread represents a different aspect of your question — past, present, future, obstacles, advice, and so on. The spread you choose shapes the kind of insight you'll receive.Choosing the right spread is like choosing the right lens: a microscope for deep inner work, a telescope for long-term perspective, a wide-angle for relationships.
The 10 Spreads on FateReading
We offer ten distinct spreads, each designed for a specific type of question:For Self-Reflection
Open Reflection — The most flexible spread. Good when you don't have a specific question but want to understand what's present in your life right now. Think of it as a general check-in with yourself.Inner World — Goes deeper into your emotional landscape. Use this when you feel something stirring beneath the surface and want to understand it. Great for journaling alongside.
For Relationships
Relationship Path — Maps the trajectory of a relationship. Where is it heading? What's supporting it? What's blocking it? Useful when you're already in a relationship and want perspective.Hidden Feelings — Explores what's beneath the surface in a connection — yours and theirs. This isn't about "mind reading" the other person, but about acknowledging the unspoken dynamics.
Love Life — A broader look at your romantic life. Good when you're single and wondering about love, or when you want to understand patterns in your romantic history.
Finding Love — Specifically for those seeking a partner. What's ready within you? What might be getting in the way? What energy should you cultivate?
Reconnection — When there's someone from your past and you're wondering whether to reach out. This spread explores the potential and the caution.
Relationship Outlook — A forecast-style spread for an existing connection. What's the current energy, and where is it likely to lead if things continue as they are?
For Transitions
Closure & Change — For endings and transitions. When something is finishing — a relationship, a job, a chapter — this spread helps you process and move forward with clarity.Another Person — Focuses on someone else in your life. Not to "read their mind," but to understand the dynamic between you and what it's teaching you.
How to Choose
Ask yourself these three questions:- Is this about me or about a relationship? If it's primarily about your inner experience, choose Inner World or Open Reflection. If it's about a connection with someone, choose from the relationship spreads.
- Am I in the situation or approaching it? If you're already in a relationship, use Relationship Path or Relationship Outlook. If you're looking for love, use Finding Love or Love Life.
- Am I processing something or exploring something? For processing (endings, transitions), use Closure & Change. For exploring (curiosity, general guidance), use Open Reflection.
Tips for a Good Reading
- Take a breath before you draw. The cards respond to your energy. Center yourself first.
- Ask a real question. "Will I find love?" is less useful than "What should I understand about my pattern with love?"
- Don't draw twice for the same question. If the answer feels uncomfortable, sit with it. The discomfort might be the point.
- Write it down. Tarot readings often make more sense in hindsight. Keep a journal.
